Earth Mother

$10,000

SOLD

An original Māori Earth Mother painting by Darcy Nicholas QSO. A serene ancestral face rises out of the hills in deep greens, hair falling like bush across the land, a distant maunga blue on the horizon. Acrylic on canvas board, 50 × 41cm, in an ornate silver frame. Darcy Nicholas is one of New Zealand’s most significant contemporary Māori artists and an Arts Foundation Icon.

The face here does not sit in front of the landscape — it is the landscape. Nicholas paints Papatūānuku in layered greens and deep viridian, her hair falling away into bush-covered slopes, her shoulders becoming the hills themselves. Above, a wide blue sky is brushed with thin cloud, and a single maunga sits blue in the far distance. The expression is calm and steady, meeting the viewer without demand.

The effect is quietly monumental. What could read as portraiture instead reads as whenua — land holding a presence that was always there, waiting to be seen.

Acrylic on canvas board, presented in an ornate silver moulding.
