“In my mind, colour is a collective group dance.”

Sophia Motoitoi Parun is a contemporary Māori mixed media artist and textile designer of Kāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe and Croatian descent, living and working in the rural Horowhenua district of New Zealand. A passionate creator and lover of colour and storytelling, Sophia uses bold expressive linework and a rich palette to tell stories that exist somewhere between the spiritual and the natural world.

Sophia's work is deeply rooted in spiritual themes drawn from the subconscious mind, where fantasy and nature intertwine. As a featured artist with Toi Māori Aotearoa, the leading organisation for contemporary Māori art in New Zealand, her practice is recognised as a significant voice within contemporary Kāi Tahu art. She uses her work as a vehicle for expressing important cultural and emotional messages, creating Māori mixed media paintings that invite the viewer to pause, feel, and reflect.

Her passion for painting and drawing accelerated during her studies towards a Bachelor of Design at Massey University in Wellington, where she majored in textile design. It was the artistic aspects of the work that captivated her most, and since relocating from Wellington to embrace the serenity of rural Horowhenua, her commitment to developing her practice has been unwavering.

Sophia has exhibited in solo, collaborative and group shows throughout the Wellington region and her spiritual Māori art continues to grow in recognition among collectors who seek original works that speak with both cultural depth and visual boldness.
