Authentic Māori Art with Provenance Documentation

NZ Māori Art Gallery is a curated gallery, not an open marketplace. Every work here is an original by an artist we represent directly, under a signed representation agreement. There are no resellers, no dealers and no third-party sellers between the artist and you.

Each work sold is supplied with a gallery artwork record documenting the artist, title, year, medium, dimensions and origin, along with a photograph of the work and its gallery reference number. The record confirms that the work was acquired directly from the artist under gallery representation, which is the provenance that matters for insurance, valuation and resale.

Every artist we represent is named, with a full biography and their body of work on the site. You can see who made your work, where they are from and what else they have made, before you buy.

Our Māori Artists

Darcy Nicholas QSO, Contemporary Māori Artist

Darcy Nicholas QSO is one of the most celebrated figures in Māori art history. His paintings have been exhibited on five continents and hang in the collections of the National Gallery of Scotland and the Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich. In August 2026 he was named an Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Icon, New Zealand’s highest arts honour, held by no more than 20 living artists, following the regional Ngā Tohu Toi Award for Tauranga Moana in 2023. His work is bold, visionary and deeply rooted in Māori cosmology and identity. To own a Darcy Nicholas painting is to own a piece of living cultural history.

Alex Nathan ONZM, Māori Silversmith and Jeweller

Alex Nathan ONZM is one of Aotearoa’s most respected contemporary jewellers. Drawing on traditional Māori design principles and the Hopi overlay technique, Alex creates handcrafted silver pieces of extraordinary refinement. Each work is a conversation between ancient tradition and contemporary craft, wearable art that carries meaning far beyond its beauty.

Maria Brockhill, Māori Clay Artist

Maria Brockhill works from her studio in Taranaki, creating ceramic sculptures of remarkable intricacy and cultural depth. Her pieces draw on the natural world and Māori tradition, rendered in clay with a distinctive hand that is entirely her own. Maria’s work has found its way into collections across New Zealand and beyond, sought after by collectors who understand that great ceramics are as significant as any painting or sculpture.

Sophia Parun, Contemporary Māori Painter

Sophia Parun brings a bold and expressive vision to contemporary Māori art. Her paintings are rich with colour, symbolism and cultural resonance, works that demand attention and reward sustained looking. Sophia represents the next generation of Māori artists carrying the tradition forward with confidence and originality.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know the Māori art I am buying is authentic?

Every work is an original, acquired directly from the artist under a gallery representation agreement. We do not sell reproductions, prints of other artists’ work, or pieces sourced through third-party sellers. Each artist is named on the site with a full biography.

What documentation comes with the artwork?

Each work is supplied with a gallery artwork record documenting the artist, title, year, medium, dimensions, origin and gallery reference number, together with a photograph of the work. It records that the work was acquired directly from the artist under gallery representation.

What is the difference between a curated gallery and an online marketplace?

On a marketplace, anyone can list anything, and the seller is often not the maker. We represent a small roster of named New Zealand, Māori and Pacific artists and sell only their original work. Every piece is selected by the gallery.

Are the artists Māori?

The artists in our Māori art collection are Māori. The gallery also represents New Zealand and Pacific artists, whose work is listed under separate categories so the distinction is always clear.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We ship to New Zealand, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe. Shipping within New Zealand is included in the price. Overseas orders are charged at a single flat rate. Large framed and high-value works are quoted individually, so please enquire.

How do I buy a work?

Most works can be purchased directly through the site. Higher-value and commissioned pieces are sold by enquiry, where we will talk you through the work, arrange a viewing where possible, and handle shipping and insurance.

Can I enquire about a work before buying?

Yes, and you are welcome to. As a small gallery we answer enquiries personally. Email lorraine@nzmaoriart.com with any question about a work, an artist, framing, shipping or delivery times.
