Power Play

A chessboard stretches across the Mackenzie country, tussock and snow-capped Southern Alps behind it, and the board’s pattern repeating up into the blue sky like a receding grid. The pieces are carved heads. On one side, pale figures in a cowboy hat and mirrored sunglasses. Facing them, dark stone knights and a figure in a wide-brimmed hat that could have come off any New Zealand farm.

Bruce Luxford paints wealth, power and land acquisition as a great game of chess. The setting is unmistakably high country, some of the most contested land in the country, and the pieces make the players plain enough without spelling anything out. Nobody in the picture is playing for a small stake.

The carved faces are characteristic of Luxford’s surrealism, where solid objects take on human features and landscapes turn into stages. Painted in oils with the fine detail and deep sky he is known for.
